I have been taking RockMelt for a test drive for the last week and have been very impressed. The marketing strategy that made me aware of the browser (via friends suggesting it to friends) is genius to the point of being borderline creepy. RockMelt integrates FaceBook, Twitter, and feeds from your favorite sites almost seamlessly with the rest of the web through a very cool interface. It's fast, friendly, and clean, but their logo has me scratching my head.
The logo looks awesome, but it depicts the Earth's crust splintering as if massive explosions were kicking off simultaneously in the core. While increases in seismic/volcanic activity and the potential obliteration of modern civilization for other reasons are popular topics on the net these days, depicting an apocalyptic disintegration of the entire planet as one's logo is a real eye-opener. My question is what are the folks at RockMelt really trying to say with this logo?
Clearly the brains behind RockMelt are well-integrated into the system and also well-funded. Here's what I gathered from a quick tour of their blog:
"Founded in 2009, RockMelt is based in sunny Mountain View, CA. We're hiring!
RockMelt has raised $40M from some of the technology industry’s greatest innovators, including Andreessen Horowitz (and the father of the browser Marc Andreessen), Accel Partners, Khosla Ventures, First Round Capital and industry legends Bill Campbell, Ron Conway and Diane Greene."
Their "Media Inquiry" contact email is to rockmelt@theoutcastagency.com, and theoutcastagency.com is a hip player in the online marketing world with a heck of a portfolio...
It will be interesting to see how RockMelt fares in the ongoing browser wars. If you've got any more info on the people behind RockMelt and the meaning of their logo, please leave a comment. Thanks.
